"Friends Through Thick & Thin"
Jan 25, 2015: Carnival of Silver Skates
Performances at 2pm and 6:30pm, All skaters skate in both performances, Performances usually last 2 hours
Groton will host the 77th annual Carnival of Silver Skates featuring more than 100 figure skaters on January 25, 2015. Two performances of this unique outdoor ice skating show will be held at the Groton ice rink at 2:00 PM and 6:30 PM. All are invited to attend.
The rink is located on the west side of town, near the baseball complex. This year’s theme is “Friends Through Thick and Thin.” It celebrates the 77th performance of the Carnival of Silver Skates. The theme is a tribute to families and friends of the Carnival and community who enjoy spending time together as friends. There are many area community members who have participated and those who continue to participate in the annual carnival and continue to improve their figure skating skills through hard work and determination while enduring freezing South Dakota temperatures and wind.
“Friends Through Thick and Thin” will feature more than 100 Groton area figure skaters from preschool to high school age. There will also be several specialty acts.
The show promises to be entertaining and inspiring, with beautiful costumes and fun and upbeat music related to the theme. An all-boys group dressed in black leather jackets with white turtlenecks and blue jeans will skate to “The Boys Are Back In Town”. The youngest skaters, called the Snowflakes, will skate to The Spongebob "Fun" song while wearing rainbow vests over red fleece costumes. The Seniors will be skating to the "Friends' Theme Song" while wearing a colorful tiered dress with silver bands. Other songs will include “The Adams Family", "Lean On Me", "Me and My Gang", and "Friend Like You" to name just a few. New spectators to the show each year often marvel at the beautiful, professional-looking costumes, thanks in large part to costume committee chair Pam Barse.
Following tradition, 2014 Carnival of Silver Skates Queen Breanna Marzahn, daughter of Wade and Renee Marzahn, of Groton, will crown the 2015 queen during the 2:00 PM performance. This year’s candidates are seniors Alyssa Sippel, Danielle Schinkel, Haley Unzen, Kaitlin O'Neill, Katie LaMee, Kiana Kokales, Rachel Blackmun, and Taylor Gustafson. It also includes juniors Allison Weber, Aubray Harry, Jamie Krueger, Jasmine Schaller, and Josie Doeden.
Admission for the show is just $3.00 for those 13 and older, $2.00 for those six to 12, and free for children five and under.
